What are OpenAI credits, and how do you buy them?

For the API, credits are prepaid monetary balance. Sign in to the OpenAI API platform, open your organization's billing settings, add a payment method and purchase credits. The minimum initial purchase is $5; the default initial amount shown by OpenAI is $10. A payment is needed to buy credits, not to browse ChatGPT Free.

A $5 balance does not mean five messages or a guaranteed number of videos. Model, input and output volume, and enabled tools determine the charge. For text models, estimate input tokens × the published input rate plus output tokens × the output rate; add any separately priced tools. Check the exact model's current API rate before running a batch.

Purchased credits expire one year after purchase. Refunds are generally unavailable, subject to applicable law, contract terms and OpenAI's stated exceptions such as confirmed billing errors. Start with a small balance rather than purchasing credits you may not use before expiry.

Does ChatGPT Plus include OpenAI API credits?

No: Plus pays for ChatGPT, and API billing is separate. ChatGPT Free also does not promise every account a free API-credit grant. If your API account already has promotional free credits, OpenAI says those are used before purchased credits; check your actual account balance and expiry rather than assuming a sign-up bonus.

OpenAI separately describes an API-credit benefit for eligible paid Pro and Business subscriptions. It requires claiming or activation and a linked API organization. Do not assume it applies to Plus, every Pro or Business account, every seat, or every API model: check the benefit shown in your account and its current conditions before budgeting.

What are the ChatGPT Free plan limits?

The official Free plan lists limited access to features including file uploads, image creation, voice, deep research and memory/context. The checked pricing material does not give a stable universal numeric allowance for each feature, so we do not promise a fixed number of messages, images or credits per day.

Available features and limits can change. When you reach a limit, follow the reset or upgrade information displayed in ChatGPT. A paid plan offers different access, but is not a promise that every tool is unlimited or that API calls are included.

How do you avoid unexpected API spending?

Check whether automatic recharge is enabled and set its threshold, refill amount and available monthly refill limit deliberately. A refill limit controls automatic top-ups, not every possible charge or usage path. Monitor the API organization's usage and balance, especially when an app can retry or run unattended.

OpenAI warns that stopping usage after a credit balance is exhausted can be delayed. Excess usage can appear as a negative balance and be deducted from the next credit purchase. Do not treat a prepaid balance or an alert as an instant hard spending cap; also limit requests, retries and batch sizes in the app using the API.
